hello all ive had Buster the beetle a short time, and ive discovered his engine is overheating. now i know this can be caused by a few problems which im working my way through. i just wanted to ask some advice.. see attached photo there is a large gap above the exhaust, would this be a case of overheating?, am i missing tinware/seal?

YUP! Your fan will be sucking hot air off the exhaust and pushing it over your cylinders then repeating the cycle. be fun to fit the seal with the engine in though. infact its fun to fit the seal with the engine out! it looks an awful big gap that.

It looks to me you'v got the wrong tinware / or rear valance there should be only a small gap between them (about 10mm) where a seal should be. like yound dubya says all the exhaust heat will be rising into your engine

The 2 holes would also be letting heat into the engine bay they should have pipes coming out of them
