Ey up Dave.
Right, youve a non narrowed beam and your Empi 8's are 5.5" wide and you will get away with fitting smart car tyres at the front. I suggest 145 or 155/65 x 15". I run these on most bugs I've had recently and the 155's give that little bit more grip. Any of the branded ones for smart cars are all good e.g. Continental, Michelin, Goodyear, Bridgestone so doesn't matter.
Rather then buy new ones = £50+, I buy part worns at approx. £20 to £30 fitted, 5mm tread.
As you are running a late bug, ergo, longer rear axle shafts, width of rear tyre is limited i.e. lower = 165 x 15 or less. If higher where the wing sits higher than the wheel, then go wider, but if you go over a big bump/carry pie eating mates in the back, then you will rub.
When you say low, how low?
Are you going to this Wednesday 21st Sept. nights meet so we can discuss?

Janski, thanks for the response, indeed i will pop over for the meet on wednesday, maybe not in the bug though as the oil light has just come on! so am in the process of finding out what's up with him.
Any way only a tickle not weed munching, too many speed humps round my way!
